Letters Beyond Form: Curatorial Assistant

Reporting to both the Curator and Design Museum staff, the Curatorial Assistant is responsible for supporting the development of the overarching narrative and concept for the Letters Beyond Form exhibition as well as supporting events, publications, and communications pertaining to the exhibition.

Qualifications: 

  • Completed or actively pursuing a graduate degree in a Design or Art History, Sociology, or a related field. 

  • Has experience writing critically about design.

  • Has experience curating exhibitions in support or lead positions. 

  • Interested in the development of new scholarship in Design History. 

  • Dedication to the empowerment and uplifting of ALAANA communities through the creation of new scholarship and equitable histories.

  • Collaborate well with diverse and talented teammates, while balancing the ability to work collectively and deliver results independently.

  • Strong writing skills. 

  • Proactive and effective communicator. 

  • Has attention to detail, with an ability to see the big picture.

Major Responsibilities Include: 

  • Support Curator in the development and curation of the Letters Beyond Form exhibition: integrating scholarly research, object based analysis and workshop based learnings into a cohesive and rigorous presentation of Chicago’s community-driven typographic legacies.

  • Draft / Proofread articles, press releases, and didactic materials surrounding the exhibition.

  • Support in the development of a cohesive vision for the marketing and design alongside contractors and other management staff.

  • Assist in the commission of new works from Chicago based designers for the exhibition and DMoC permanent collection.

  • Support and assist in programming and workshops with the Engagement Fellow and Program Director.

  • Support in the engagement of communities and stakeholders involved in the work presented in the exhibition to ensure ethical, honest, and transparent practices.

  • Work 10 hours per week, one day in person on site at the Design Museum and other hours as needed elsewhere.

COMPENSATION

Hourly: $30/hour, 10 hours/week, 33 weeks (not to exceed $9,900)
