Letters Beyond Form: Curatorial Intern

Reporting to the Curator and Design Museum staff, the Curatorial Intern is responsible for supporting the development of the introductory narrative and its documentation for the Letters Beyond Form exhibition.

Qualifications: 

  • Pursuing or a recent graduate from an undergraduate degree program in art or design history, American History, Sociology or a related field 

  • Interest in curatorial work (does not need demonstrated interest) 

  • Organized and able to manage time and responsibilities with ease

  • Detail oriented, especially in relationship to written content 

  • An interest in the development and recontextualization of design history toward more equitable and inclusive narratives.

  • Dedication to the empowerment and uplifting of ALAANA communities through the creation of new scholarship and equitable histories.

  • Collaborate well with diverse and talented teammates, while balancing the ability to work collectively and deliver results independently.

  • Works from offices at the Design Museum

Major Responsibilities Include: 

  • Support in the development and curation of the Letters Beyond Form exhibition: integrating scholarly research, object based analysis and workshop based learnings into a cohesive and rigorous presentation of Chicago’s community-driven typographic legacies.

  • Building an introductory narrative and vision surrounding the mainstream typographic history of Chicago and community layout of the city

  • Write didactic information to describe and contextualize exhibition materials within design history and in respect to new research and contemporary design communities

  • Create a recommended layout and flow of materials within the introductory portion of the exhibition

  • Work closely with the Curator and Curatorial assistant to develop an overall curatorial narrative and flow within the exhibition

  • Write and assist with organizational layout of catalog content for exhibition documentation.

  • Support and assist in programming and workshops with the Engagement Fellow and Program Director

  • Engage with the communities and stakeholders involved in the work presented in the exhibition to ensure ethical, honest, and transparent practices 

  • Work 10 hours per week, one day in person on site at the Design Museum and other hours as needed elsewhere

COMPENSATION

Hourly: $20/hour, 20 hours/week, 13 weeks (not to exceed $5,200)
