Letters Beyond Form: Engagement Fellow

Reporting to the Curator and Design Museum staff, the Engagement Fellow is responsible for developing the community engagement plans and goals for the Letters Beyond Form exhibition as well as events, publications, and communications pertaining to the exhibition. As part of the management team for this project, they are included in major decisions and strategic planning for Letters Beyond Form.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and implement re-exhibition community evaluation programs (i.e. convenings, interviews, content review sessions, etc.) 

  • Developing proposals for city-wide engagement programs to be implemented during the exhibition  

  • Helping with traveling exhibition concepts across Pilsen and Bronzeville partner locations.

  • Works with community partners to ensure they are engaged in the Design Museum’s content while their institutional/community goals are simultaneously being met 

  • Works partially from community settings (studio visits, in communities, etc) from the museum and remote when appropriate

  • Leads workshops in alongside curator and guest designers or scholars

  • Support and facilitate relationship-building and collaborations that center community participation and insight that can lead to the development of community justice, new scholarship and institutional effectiveness. 

Qualifications:

  • Artists, designers, or educators with a strong community-centered practice (a history of working with communities to develop projects in response to community members’ needs or interest); or community organizers who have worked on art initiatives.

  • Two or more years of community-centered work or project experience.

  • Experiential or scholarly knowledge of Chicago’s South and West side neighborhoods, Candidates who have direct relationships and experience in Pilsen and Bronzeville will be prioritized. Community members from those neighborhoods will also be prioritized.

  • Dedication to the empowerment and uplifting of ALAANA communities through the creation of new scholarship, equitable histories, and the creation of new learning systems.

  • Collaborate well with diverse and talented teammates, while balancing the ability to work collectively and deliver results independently.

  • A demonstrated ability to create programming that empowers community.

  • Confidence in engaging around difficult or uncomfortable histories and concepts.

  • Proactive and effective communicator.

  • Has attention to detail, with an ability to see the big picture.

COMPENSATION

Hourly: $50/hour, 10 hours/week, 40 weeks (not to exceed $20,000)
