The Next Voices Embodied Exhibition

July 13 – October 13, 2024

In March of 2023, Voices Embodied: Uplifted was boldly displayed throughout the Design Museum of Chicago, highlighting a relationship between disability and community.

The work of designers and artists was displayed to reconsider the space in a way that was moody, engaging and vulnerable. Colorful work, visible in the large public-facing windows engaged the community while the dark vault space located in the back of the museum became a place of contemplation where viewers were close in proximity to the pieces. All the selected works came from individual perspectives but were displayed in such a way that the work began to relate and support one another.

While being bold and colorful, and expressing pride, the work was invitational. The pieces in Voices Embodied: Uplifted demonstrated the strength of a supportive community.

Join us in July of 2024 for the next iteration of the Voices Embodied project, an exhibition at the Design Museum of Chicago.

About the curator

Voices Embodied Project was conceived by Alex Stark who earned his BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2016. Alex is currently an advisor and event planner in SAIC’s Disability and Learning Resource Center. After earning his BFA, Alex chose to offer his perspective as a disabled artist, focusing on the representation of disability in a larger diversity conversation happening at the School. In addition to his disability related work, Alex is a practicing painter who has shown work in LA, New York, Chicago and Colorado. Considering both an interest in art, and a passion for creating platforms for voices to be heard, Alex advocates for creative expression.

Voices Embodied is in partnership with the Wellness Center at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
