Longhand: A hand- and letter-writing workshop

  • Chicago Design Museum 108 N State St, 3rd floor Chicago United States (map)

Writing has a long and storied history. Since the genesis of human communication, it has served as both function and visual expression. To this day, it is one of the most basic ways in which we brand and present ourselves to others. Though modern technology has dramatically changed our style of communication, the handwritten letter still serves as an honest, purposeful, and authentic way of connecting with other humans.

In this workshop, Jenna Blazevich will lead a series of handwriting exercises, while providing background and context on how the handwritten letter has brought her closer to those she loves. Tanner Woodford will give a primer on Noteworthy Work, a weekly subscription for Design Museum members that openly wonders, “What’s worth preserving?”

You will leave with writing implements, including paper, envelopes, and pencils, so that you can continue this practice at home. Any letters written in the workshop will be stamped and mailed for you.

The museum is closed until June 30th, 2020.

While distancing we are planning virtual events, moving our exhibitions online, and publishing student design projects. Take care of yourself!
