Matter: A group show celebrating the breadth of material expertise in Chicago design.
We're here in this moment to encourage connections between Chicago-based interior designers, architects, brands, and studios that produce high-quality design.
Proceeds from Matter will go to support the ongoing mission for the Design Museum of Chicago, whose work shares the history of design, gives context for how design can influence the future, and celebrates the people working to shape it.
Chicago has a long history as a city of creativity and craftsmanship. There is a raw quality to being part of the Chicago manufacturing industry. Businesses build identities off the knowledge of specific materials and processes that put them on the map. They become experts. They run specialized shops. We’re especially intrigued by those who learn from that expertise and elevate it by applying it to their own creative avenues.
Zachary A. was founded on one of those outgrowths—ideas developed from old techniques, resulting in a new level of craftsmanship. Our craft is a cast resin and fiberglass process that we use to design and manufacture a large collection of unique outdoor furniture.
We want to highlight how today’s designers have built on the heritage of Chicago manufacturing to push the boundaries of a wide range of materials and processes. So we invited a group of Chicago designers, who have elevated a craft to the level of artisan manufacturing, to showcase their respective materials and processes through a showroom exhibition within our studio.
