We usually think of a book as a container for a linear story with a beginning, middle, and end. Yet, some of the most fascinating stories reveal the ending upfront and work backward or nonlinearly. In both cases, the book itself looks the same — a rectangular object with a cover and various pages in-between.
In this workshop, we’ll examine other forms of bookmaking that allow the storyteller as well as the reader to interact with and be in charge of the outcome of the story. We’ll use folding techniques to embed the creation of a nonlinear story within the book form. This workshop will allow you to work with complex geometrical concepts to create these unique book forms, and we promise that it won’t even feel like you’re doing math. If you’re interested in unique book forms, storytelling, design, comic illustration, or if you just want to cut up and fold a bunch of paper, this is the workshop for you!
In accordance with city guidelines regarding COVID safety, all guests are required to wear masks throughout the duration of the workshop.
About Cristiaan
Cristiaan Jackson is a recent graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and currently works as an Associate Designer at Golin. Her personal work consists of exploring mathematical principles and how they show up in everyday situations through design. She’s continuously working towards debunking the myths and reducing intimidation surrounding mathematical concepts – particularly the theory of infinity – by using design to show unique perspectives of these concepts.
Cristiaan looks forward to the chance to design away from the computer through bookbinding and installation design. Essentially, she puts a spin on traditional design forms to examine new ways of learning and teaching complex and sometimes controversial ideas.
