ChiDM Presents: Poetry Foundation, Poetry and Architecture

"Editor of Poetry Magazine, Don Share, discusses founding editor Harriet Monroe’s view of poetry and how that has translated into the Poetry Foundation’s architecture. In 1912, Monroe saw the need to create a home for poetry, and envisioned a magazine that would serve as a gallery of poems. Over 100 years later her “little” magazine has evolved into a major literary organization with a suite of robust programs, including a literal home for poetry, designed by architect John Ronan, which includes a gallery for artwork that resonates with poetry.

ChiDM Presents: Douglas Snider

From the first perspective drawings through the advent of computer aided design, the architect’s tools have given us greater and greater ability to engage with virtual architecture at a human scale. A progression in the paradigm shift of Building Information Modeling, virtual reality gives the designer and stakeholders the ability to inhabit their designs rather than just view them from a user’s perspective. This visceral sense of presence within VR – the cognitive feeling of being in a remote or virtual place – can make the user a human scale, spatial participant in a virtual place like no other medium that has come before. Through a number of case-studies spanning design phases, this presentation will make the argument for presence-influenced architectural design to create human-centered spaces.

Journey Mapping for Better Experience Design

Everybody has as story to tell, if you listen closely. The stories can be decades-long epics or minute-by-minute emotional roller coasters. Companies, marketers, designers and developers all create stories when they build customer experiences. But will those experiences be pleasant and useful, or frustrating and unproductive? User personas and journey maps help us architect stories of experience by understanding user needs and crafting key customer touch points. They’re great tools for understanding your audience’s feelings, motivations, questions and reservations at every step of an experience.

Chicago Design Works: Student bookbinding workshop

Bookbinding is an artistic craft that extends back all the way to the fifth century, and at the same time, a highly mechanized, modern industry. The division between craft and industry is not as wide as one might imagine. Some consider bookbinding to be therapeutic, and others see its value as purely functional. In this workshop, you can expect to learn basics of bookbinding, meet other ChiDM student members, and leave with tools that will allow you to continue exploring the craft at home.

This event is for student members only.

Mohawk presents: The Strathmore Archive

Since Strathmore Paper’s founding in 1892, the brand has been synonymous with quality, beauty and design. Inspired by the flora of Scotland’s Strathmore Valley, company founder Horace Moses adopted both the Strathmore name and the valley’s natural icon—the thistle—as symbols of quality for his papers.

Early in the evolution of the Western Massachusetts-based company, Horace Moses chose to align with the leading illustrators of his day to demonstrate how paper and print could work together to create beautiful results and more effective communication.

Mohawk, who acquired the Strathmore brand in 2005 and has served as steward of the legendary name since, has uncovered a treasure trove of over 100 years of rare, historic and beautiful Strathmore paper promotions called The Strathmore Archive.

ChiDM × STA Chicago: Risograph Workshop

This workshop is now sold out! Sign up for our mailing list at ChiDM.com for updates on future events.

First opening its doors in 1946 in Toyko, Japan, Risograph finds its roots in mimeograph technology. The machine is designed to create a master on wax-like paper, almost like a stencil, and stamp it onto the pages, creating a “live ink” look. The machine uses soy-based ink and can offset print runs of hundreds at 150 pages per minute. Presented by STA Chicago and ChiDM.

In this workshop, you can expect to learn Risograph basics, including how to prepare files, operate the machine and troubleshoot problems. We will also discuss advanced Risograph techniques, using multiple colors with multiple images to achieve different aesthetics.

ChiDM × Pantone: Intro to Color Theory Workshop

Color is one of the most powerful tools in a designer’s visual vocabulary. It influences our moods, our perception of space, triggers dynamic visual interactions, and embodies diverse meanings across cultures. The meaning, interaction, and representation of color has been an intense area of focus for many historical and contemporary artists and designers.

This workshop, generously sponsored by Pantone, will explore some of the fundamental principles of color interaction and theory through hands-on experiments using colored paper. Led by ChiDM executive creative director Matthew Terdich, and UIC Foundation Curriculum Master of Color Theory Jennifer Wandro.
